How much should you tip at a restaurant?+
Standard US restaurant tipping: 15% for adequate service, 18-20% for good service, 22-25% for exceptional service. Tipping below 15% signals dissatisfaction. In fine dining, 20% is the baseline expectation. Many Americans now use 20% as their standard regardless of service quality, given that servers often earn below minimum wage and rely on tips as primary income.
Should you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?+
Both are acceptable — most Americans tip on the pre-tax amount, which is the traditional approach. Tipping on the post-tax amount is slightly more generous. The difference is small: on a $100 bill with 8% tax, tipping 20% on pre-tax gives $20, while post-tax gives $21.60. Our calculator uses the pre-tax bill amount by default.
What are standard tip amounts for other services?+
General US guidelines: Bartenders $1-2 per drink or 15-20%; Food delivery 15-20% (minimum $3-5); Taxi/rideshare 15-20%; Hotel housekeeping $2-5 per night; Hair salon 15-20%; Spa/massage 15-20%; Pizza delivery $3-5; Barista $1 or 10-15%; Valet parking $2-5 when retrieving.
Do other countries have the same tipping culture?+
No — tipping customs vary enormously. In Japan, tipping is considered rude and may be refused. In Australia and New Zealand, tips are appreciated but not expected. In the UK, 10-12.5% is common in sit-down restaurants. In France, a small tip of 5-10% is polite. In Germany, rounding up the bill is standard. Always research local customs before traveling.
